All hospice care and support is provided at no cost to the patient, or their families, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion or means. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from the Hawke’s Bay DHB, but we still need the support of people like you to make donations or to become a volunteer.
There are many ways you can get involved with Cranford Hospice. For example, donate your time or money, donate goods to any of our hospice stores around Hawke’s Bay, shop at our hospice stores, leave a gift in your Will to Cranford Hospice, run your own event for Cranford Hospice or attend one of our events. The possibilities really are endless.
As an essential health service, hospice receives funding from Government through our local district health board, but financial support from the community is essential to meet the shortfall – here at Cranford Hospice, we require around $2.8 million annually or $7,700 each day to be able to keep providing the level and range of services in our community at no cost to the patient or their family.
Ways that you can help:
Please contact the Marketing and Fundraising Manager, Nathalie van Dort, if you would like to know more about donating to Cranford Hospice. Email: Nathalie.vandort@cranfordhospice.org.nz or phone: (06) 878 7047.
Please contact our Volunteers Coordinator Amanda Aitken, if you would like to know more about becoming a volunteer. Email: amanda.aitken@cranfordhospice.org.nz or phone: (06) 878 7047.
24 hours day, 7 days a week, Cranford Hospice staff provide palliative care to patients in their own homes, hospital or in a residential care facility. Our aim is to enable patients to remain independent in their own home and to maintain a normal life in a familiar and comfortable setting for as long as possible. Our Community Nursing Team is a team of specialist registered nurses who visit patients to monitor and support them and their family/whanau. Working alongside our Nursing Team is our Family Support Team that consists of a Social Worker, Counsellor, Physio Therapist, Carer Support Coordinator, Kaitakawaenga, Pastoral Care Coordinator and Music Therapist. This team supports our patients and families spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs. We also have close links with other health providers involved in patient care such as GPs and district nurses. Cranford Hospice also has a respite bed available within the inpatient unit.
We have an eight bed inpatient unit. All of the rooms are single and five have access to an ensuite bathroom facility. Patients are often admitted to Cranford Hospice for review and treatment of symptoms that are difficult to relieve in the community or for respite care, family/whanau support. Inpatient care is managed by the multidisciplinary team that includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists and members of our Family Support Team. We have a family flat that is available for extended family to stay at the hospice. The family flat consists of a lounge area and bathroom, with shared kitchen facilities. Family are free to come and go from the Hospice as there are no set visitng hours. All visitors must, however sign in and out at reception for Health & Safety reasons.
Cranford also offers out-patient appointments to enable specialist medical follow up and assessment. Our patients’ GPs are actively involved in this continued care and the outcomes of these visits often involve adjustments to medications. Our clinics are run out of the hospice for local patients and we also travel to Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay once a month.
A registered nurse is available by phone 24 hours a day for support and advice. This service is available to patients, family/whanau or other health professionals. Our phone number is 06 878 7047.
Cranford Hospice has strong links with the hospital palliative care team based at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital. There is regular consultation to ensure the seamless and consistent care of our patients, their family and whanua. The hospital palliative care team consists of two palliative care specialist nurses and a palliative care medical specialist.
Many people think of hospice services as just a building, when in fact it is a philosophy of care. It is true that most hospice services in New Zealand have inpatient facilities, but the majority of people are cared for in their own homes or retirement village.
Anyone living with a life limiting condition – e.g. heart failure, motor neurone disease, MS or cancer – can access and benefit from hospice services.
Our aim is to help people make the most of their lives; to live every moment in whatever way is important to them.
Hospice care has a unique whole person approach – which means physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are equally important – a multidisciplinary team provides care for the person who is dying and their families, whanau and friends, both before and after a death.
There are 29 Hospice services throughout New Zealand. Cranford Hospice provides this care for the Hawke’s Bay region, from Takapau to Mahia.
